"We must work harder to ensure more women ministers and MKs. as the elections approach, I urge all Israeli women to make their voices heard."
On Tuesday, September 10, 2019, October 10 (Jewish calendar), Elu President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin hosted the Women in Diplomacy Network, which brings together Israeli women diplomats and women diplomats representing the State of Israel, at Beit HaNasi.
The network was established in 2012 by Israeli women diplomats and the Israeli diplomatic community. It serves as a support network for women diplomats throughout their careers and as a platform for ideas and advocacy to address gender equality issues in the diplomatic world.
"Women have fought and continue to fight for the right to represent their country as diplomats. The fight for equality was, and still is, a just cause, and you have proven its success," the president said. "Throughout your career, you have brought greater diversity, different perspectives and new thinking to foreign policy conflict resolution and diplomacy. In our complex and challenging world, this has never been more important. Women don't just have to fight for gender equality. We must all demand it and work to achieve it. "
We cannot imagine history without the many great and courageous women who did not wait for anyone's approval to fulfill their calling and change the world," the president added. In Israel, Golda Meir served as an early example for us. "The president also said he hopes to see a woman president in the coming years.
"We are proud to see Israeli women as Supreme Court presidents, Bank of Israel governors, government ministers, party leaders, IDF generals, Nobel laureates and CEOs of major corporations. But there is still much work to be done. We must do more to include Arab and ultra-orthodox women in the workforce and in leadership positions, and we must work harder to ensure that there are more women ministers and assistant secretaries. As we approach the elections, I urge all Israeli women to speak out and seek elected office and influence, especially in conflict resolution, foreign policy and security decisions," he concluded.
