The UN Human Rights Council has been taken over by human rights violators, Israel will fight to improve the world (23.10.2019)

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin at a Canadian state dinner.

The president said, "Unfortunately, we live in times that do not value morality. The United Nations Human Rights Council has been taken over by human rights abusers, and many countries are prioritizing economic ties with radical regimes like Iran over opposing tyranny and terrorism. In the face of these challenges, we must not surrender. We must unite to improve the world.

In his remarks, the president commented on the situation in southern Israel and said, "This is a sensitive time for the State of Israel. For years, our citizens in the south have been living with missiles from Gaza. Sleeping in bomb shelters night after night is a hard reality to grasp. In the past few weeks, this has become a reality for more Israelis. Just last week, a rocket fired from Gaza hit a house in central Israel, injuring seven people, including a 6-month-old baby. These rockets were fired by Hamas, a ruthless and brutal terrorist organization.

Yesterday, April 2/25, Israeli President Reuven (Reuven) Rivlin attended a state luncheon hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Afterwards, the President laid a wreath at the Holocaust Memorial in Ottawa, accompanied by the Prime Minister.

At the luncheon, the President told the Prime Minister, "I want to thank you not only for your friendship, but also for your moral leadership. The mark of a true leader is his willingness to take a clear moral stand. Your moral stance against all forms of anti-Semitism, Israel's strong support at the United Nations, and the annual United Nations General Assembly resolution on the human rights situation in Iran are just a few examples of your moral leadership.

The president added, "Unfortunately, we live in times when morality is not valued. The UN Human Rights Council has been taken over by human rights abusers, and many countries are prioritizing economic ties with radical regimes like Iran over opposing tyranny and terrorism. In the face of these challenges, we must not surrender. We must join together to improve the world. I am convinced that Israel and Canada can join with other like-minded nations to build a new global alliance based on moral leadership and responsibility. Prime Minister Trudeau thanked President Rivlin for his remarks and said, "We work together to combat hatred and anti-Semitism around the world, including through the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and the international campaign against anti-Semitism. Our government will continue to oppose BDS and Israeli Apartheid Week in the strongest terms, which makes Israel a completely different standard than any other country in the world. Mr. President, it is up to us now," the Prime Minister said, adding, "As we write the next chapter of our friendship and cooperation, we must continue the proud tradition of our predecessors. I have no doubt that our relationship will only strengthen and our people will grow closer. "

In the evening, the Governor held a state dinner in honor of President Rivlin. The evening began with the playing of two national anthems and brief comments by the President and the Governor.

Israel will take all necessary measures to protect the safety of its citizens. But in our uncompromising struggle against terrorism, we will never compromise on legal and moral standards. "

The president added, "The people of Gaza are not our enemy. We are not at war with Islam. We seek peace for our country, and we seek peace with our neighbors. Peace requires trust, and there is little trust between Israel and the Palestinians. It won't happen overnight, and it won't happen through external coercion, one-sided resolutions or boycotts. But we are ready to do what we can to start.

President Rivlin concluded his remarks by saying, "Canada has been a true friend of Israel since our founding seventy years ago. Time and time again, you have opposed the United Nations' anti-Israel initiatives and fought alongside Israel against anti-Semitism and discrimination. Thank you."

Governor General Julie Payette: "People may think there are many differences between Israel and Canada, but I think we have a lot in common. By cherishing peace, innovation and love, we can strengthen the deep ties between our peoples. Tonight, we celebrate diversity, tolerate each other, and appreciate people from different cultures. We have a lot in common; not just the things that make us different. "
